Women Entrepreneur - The future of entrepreneurship

Women Entrepreneurs are more successful than Men Entrepreneurs, according to a study.

However, did you know, on average, there is only 1 woman entrepreneur for every 3 men entrepreneurs in the world?!

Shocking, isn’t it?!

But, this is a fact.

It has been reported by Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). Even though there has been so much that we (men) have been doing to bring gender equality to the forefront but still the numbers are nightmarish.

So, let’s dive deeper into the matter and find out what we can do to change the landscape of women entrepreneurship in India?! However, to do that we need to understand a few things. Starting with the term 'women entrepreneur.’

What does it mean to be a Woman Entrepreneur?

The definition of women entrepreneurship may vary with each and every woman entrepreneur. Some might refer to it as survival, some believe women entrepreneurship is about being your own boss while others may think of it as having all the business-related stats at your fingertips. All of these might be true in a sense but what women entrepreneurship actually is - all about making an impact, no matter how small. If, whatever service or product you are offering to the world, that has made the life of at least one person better then you are an entrepreneur.

We often confuse business owners as entrepreneurs but there is a distinction. All entrepreneurs can be termed as business owners but not all business owners can be termed as entrepreneurs. The reason is, business owners may follow a similar business model for a product or service that is already in the market and they replicate the same thing to generate revenue. As entrepreneurs, it is all about making a difference. It’s all about solving a problem and the more common a problem that you solve, the more impact you can have in society. Alongside that, there are other aspects to it that can change your life drastically, and this is not something we are overselling to you.

If you think we are then let us present to you the reasons why you should pursue women entrepreneurship?!

Why should you choose women entrepreneurship?

Anything that adds meaning and value to our lives, will not be easy to achieve and entrepreneurship as a whole brings so many values that can feel surreal. The perks of women entrepreneur are:

  • Be the Alpha and Omega: Being a woman entrepreneur means being there from start to finish for every project, every decision, every crisis situation. You have to make a decision and then you have to take responsibility for that decision. You will have both the freedom and authority to set the direction of your business venture and what you sow (in terms of business) is what you will reap.
  • Money, Money, Money: If you are a big fan of the phrase, ‘Money, Money, Money,’ women entrepreneurship can give you that. It’s true that your business has to be doing all the right things that bring in the money and if your business is, well it will rain money, literally. Plus, all the rich people in the world are either business owners or entrepreneurs. No one has made it to that list yet just being an employee.
  • Making a Difference: If you’ve always dreamt of making a difference in the world, women entrepreneurship gives you the opportunity to create something meaningful and also to find a solution to a problem that you always wanted to solve.
  • Constant growth and development: If being comfortable in a comfort zone scares you, your women's entrepreneurial journey can open up doorways that would lead to a constant learning experience. You'll be able to develop new skills and expertise becoming wiser in the process.
  • From 0 to 100: There is a certain joy in being able to create something from the ground up and taking that something to greater heights. This fulfillment is unparalleled.

The life of a woman entrepreneur is a roller coaster and for that reason, it is believed that the path of women entrepreneurship isn't for every woman. Like excelling in every other profession or passion it also demands hard work, dedication, and effort.

Now that we have an understanding of what women entrepreneurship is and why you should be a woman entrepreneur, let’s focus on what qualities a woman entrepreneur must have?!

What qualities do you need to become a woman entrepreneur?

Theoretically, there is a long list of qualities that have to be checked in to become a woman entrepreneur. Even though these qualities are common in everyone, not everyone realizes it. The qualities are as follows:

  • Having a strong passion
  • Having a vision
  • Being Innovative
  • Risk-Taking abilities
  • Being resourceful
  • Problem-Solving abilities
  • Having leadership and communication skills
  • Having resilience
  • Being adaptable
  • Having a Business Acumen
  • Must be Self-Disciplined
  • Must have Time Management skills
  • Should be Creative
  • Must have a Customer Oriented Focus

Actually, one doesn’t need this laundry list of qualities to be a woman entrepreneur but just two: willpower and grit.

You have to understand that women entrepreneurship is not a test of your skill or intellect, it has always been a test of your indomitable will and grit.

Having relevant experience or skills in the industry you are trying to be a woman entrepreneur in has added advantages but then again, everyone who has become a master of his or her craft has started as a beginner only. So, if there’s something in your heart that keeps you passionate and fills you up with excitement then without a second’s hesitation go for it.

Yes, you will stumble. You will fail but if you keep holding on, you will reach your destination. That’s a given. Otherwise, decades later you might have the regret of not following your heart and chasing your dreams when you still had the opportunity to have a completely different life. And, regrets like this can eat you up from the inside for as long as you breathe.

Remember that, it’s better to fail in something you always wanted to do than to settle for something that you never wanted to do in the first place.

How to become a successful woman entrepreneur?

W E5

To be a successful woman entrepreneur, all you have to do is to get started with your entrepreneurial idea. If you are a woman, you might face more problems than a man on your entrepreneurial journey but, as we said before, women entrepreneurship is a test of will and grit. So these so-called problems or challenges may slow you down but can never stop you.

Here is a list of the so-called problems and challenges that a woman entrepreneur has to face in her entrepreneurial adventure because there are certain biases and notions around the world when it comes to women entrepreneurship:

  • Availability of funding: Studies presented by The Kauffman Foundation state that women-led businesses find it more difficult to gather funds than male-led businesses. This gap in funding can be a major barrier for women entrepreneurs starting a business. Investors often have this notion that women-owned businesses are riskier to invest in. The same goes for receiving a loan for a woman entrepreneur.
  • Connection and Mentorship: Building a strong professional network becomes a daunting challenge for women entrepreneurs due to the lack of women in leadership roles.
  • Lacking Business Expertise: There is a bias that women lack business acumen or a business mindset. This view can make it harder for women entrepreneurs to get funding or gain the respect of potential investors and business partners.
  • Risk Aversion: Women are often regarded as more risk-averse than men. To run a business is to take risks and if the notion is women tend to avoid taking necessary risks that means their business will most likely miss out on many opportunities. This perspective of women entrepreneurs might not be actually true, but it influences the decisions and opportunities presented to women.
  • Biased Mindset: In certain industries, such as tech and finance, women entrepreneurs are still struggling to find a sure footing as these industries are still believed to be male-dominated. This type of notion can make it difficult for women entrepreneurs to gain the recognition they deserve.
  • Gender Biases: Even in the 21st century there are societal beliefs that women are less suited for leadership roles or entrepreneurial endeavors. These biases make women entrepreneurs have a lack of confidence and trust from everyone alike.
  • Finding the right balance: Society expects women to be the caregiver of their respective families so finding the right balance between their family life and entrepreneurship can be a tussle sometimes for women entrepreneurs.

Despite these numerous challenges, there are plenty of successful women entrepreneurs who started from scratch and took their businesses beyond all horizons.

Here are two such exemplary examples of women entrepreneurs:

Reshma Saujani - Founder of Girls Who Code

We1

Reshma Saujani's story is the story of all struggling women entrepreneurs who started off from nothing. She started her non-profit organization ‘Girls Who Code’ in 2012 from her kitchen table to spread awareness and ignite the spark of coding in women because she noticed that young girls and women are not that interested in computer science. Her journey with ‘Girls Who Code’ found international recognition and hundreds of thousands of women had an impact on their lives across the US and Canada.

Sara Blakely - Founder of Spanx

We2

Sara Blakely is another renowned name when it comes to women entrepreneurs who built a global brand from nothing. She was frustrated by the lack of comfortable shapewear options available in the market that would meet her requirements. So, she decided to find the solution on her own. She had $5,000 in savings which she invested and started Spanx from her apartment in 2000.

Despite being innovative with her business products, she faced rejections from stores and shops but she persevered. Luck turned things in her favor and one business deal became a turning point. Spanx is now a billion-dollar brand and has global recognition.

These two women entrepreneurs among hundreds and thousands of others are the evidence that there’s nothing a woman can do in her life if she chooses to. Struggles and problems are everywhere and will be in everything that you want to do but you mustn’t let them shackle you. It doesn’t matter what notions or perceptions the society has for women entrepreneurs, set your own course and sail to your destination.

One of the crucial aspects of women entrepreneurship is that, most of the time it will only be you looking at your dreams believing in yourself and no one else, not even your friends or family. But, it’s alright. You have to understand that they do not see your vision or believe in your dreams because all they see are limitations and failure down the road because they neither have the same mindset as you nor the same heart.

Life has no pre-defined purpose or meaning to begin with, the onus is on us to give it meaning and purpose.

So, what else are you waiting for to join the network of women entrepreneurs or maybe the first woman entrepreneur in your family?!

If you are doubting yourself because of the fact whether or not you will be successful then the only way to find out is by giving it a try. Because, if you do not try, you will never be successful but if you do; you might be successful sooner than you expect yourself to be.
